Hi Kimberly,
I guess the first question would be how much the new site will change vs the old one in the content and design areas. WP opens up a lot of possibilities for easy updating, management, and functionality, but can be trickier customize than a traditional website.
The first questions you should ask yourself when using WP, I think, are:
Is the website going to look and function like a blog? This is WP’s “default” mode, and the easiest to set up.
Or do you want it to look more like a regular website, and use WP as more of a content management system? This route takes more customizing and tweaking, but can yield some great results.
If you’re not very familiar with it I would recommend you start reading up on how it all works. Key concepts:
Posts vs Pages vs Categories
Using Wordpress as a CMS
Themes
Plugins
The wordpress.org site is a godo palce to start, Google is your friend, and for some cutting edge stuff http://digwp.com/ is pretty cool.
Have fun!
